The importance of workplace wellbeing

Wellbeing at work is a hot topic, and for good reason! As the Stevenson and Farmer Review of 2017 points out, "Good work is good for you, and bad work is bad for you. It matters for your health and wellbeing, your happiness and your effectiveness."

Stevenson Farmer Review of Mental Health & Employers

But what exactly is "wellbeing"? It's not just about being physically healthy, but also includes your mental and emotional well-being. It's the feeling of being content, balanced, and fulfilled.

When it comes to the workplace, having a sense of wellbeing is crucial for a few reasons. For one, it can lead to increased productivity. When you're feeling good, you're more likely to be focused and motivated to tackle your work. Additionally, good mental and physical health can lead to stronger relationships with your colleagues, which can make your work environment more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Perhaps most importantly, having a sense of wellbeing can lead to greater resilience. We all know that work can be stressful at times, but when you have a solid sense of wellbeing, you're better equipped to handle those challenges and bounce back from setbacks.

Wellbeing at work isn’t offering free yoga classes at lunchtime, although that may be one way to show your staff you care! All businesses should be able to create a wellbeing policy and include simple strategies that can be implemented at little or no extra cost to the business.

Employers can;
  • 1. Encourage physical activity: Encourage employees to take regular breaks and get up and move around. This can help to improve their physical health and reduce stress.
  • 2. Promote a healthy work-life balance: Encourage employees to take the time they need to rest, relax and recharge. This can help them to feel more refreshed and productive when they return to work.
  • 3. Create a positive work environment: Encourage a culture of positivity and respect in the workplace. This can help to improve morale and reduce stress.
  • 4. Offer Mental Health Support: Provide resources and support for employees who may be struggling with their mental health. This can help to improve their well-being and reduce the risk of burnout.
  • 5. Encourage open communication: Encourage employees to share their thoughts and concerns with management. This can help to create a sense of trust and understanding in the workplace.
  • 6. Provide opportunities for professional development: Investing in employees development can help them to feel more engaged and fulfilled in their work.
  • 7. Encourage Social Connection: Encourage employees to form connections and friendships with their colleagues, this can improve their sense of belonging and well-being.
  • 8. Implement flexible working arrangements: Offer flexible working hours and remote working options, this can help employees to balance their work and personal commitments.
So, why is workplace wellbeing so important?

It leads to a happier, more productive, and more resilient you! Who doesn't want that? Plus, it's like the old saying goes, "If you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life." (Okay, I might have made that up, but you get the point!)
